Day 215

Day 215 (cdt 42): 36 miles
I was all high and mighty about how awesome the trail was yesterday being up on a ridge but of course that came back to bite me. Today was much of the same, except shortly after sunrise I was walking in clouds and it thunderstormed basically all day after noon.
Around 11 I got down to Rogers pass road crossing and looked at the weather and it looked pretty bad, basically 80% or higher rain and thunderstorms all the rest of the day. Since the upcoming trail was still ridge walking I opted to not do that in an all day thunderstorm. Instead I road walked at a lower elevation cause I’d rather not get struck by lightning. It was a few extra miles but I felt much safer than being at the highest elevations in the surrounding area with lightning striking around.
Most of the day was pretty boring and I got back on the actual trail later in the dayaftet hanging out in a pit toilet for a while avoiding the worst of the storm. When I got going again the sky still didn’t look great but at least it wasn’t booming anymore. It rained off and on today and I got wet which wasn’t ideal but it was better than the painful hail of a few days ago. It was pretty chilly with the biting wind. My hands were numb most of the day and I realize I’ll probably need to get my gloves again pretty soon even though it’s august. I also seemed to have lost my pack cover again. This is the second time I’ve done that this year and of course I don’t realize it until I need it. Thankfully I had a garbage bag inside my pack so I could put everything important in there to keep it from getting really wet.
Also I think the animals far off in the distance yesterday were cows. I didn’t see any fresh signs that indicated it was anything else but there was old cow shit so they were at least in the area.
