Day 276 (AT 80): 28 miles
To start off, I just want to state for those that might not know that as an aspect of this hike I’m doing a fundraiser for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. It’s a great organization and I’m asking you to consider donating. With hiking roughly 8,000 miles this year my goal was to raise $8,000 and I’m well short of that so let’s put in some serious work here toward the end to get closer to that mark. I’ve currently got about 1,300 followers on this account so if everyone donated a dollar that’s over a grand right there. If you’d like to donate there’s a link in my bio. Translation for the older folks reading this, if you click on my name, near the top of the new page will be a clickable link in blue lettering and that will take you to the promised land. If you don’t wanna take the time to put in your credit card you can Venmo me at Brandon_weis and I’ll make sure it gets there
I did a small resupply and got a frozen pizza at the Sterling Inn which had some Shining vibes with not really anyone there. But the most interesting part of the day was going across the Kennebec River. It’s pretty big and fording it is dangerous so it’s highly discouraged. Normally there’s a ferry across a few times a day during normal hiker season but since I’m a little late that’s not running anymore. Thankfully there’s a nice lady named Cheryl that lives on the river and has a canoe and takes hikers across. It was not long but it was some tough paddling going upstream. For a while we were just rowing in place cause the current was too strong and I was reminded of my spongebob arms and how weak I am now. That might’ve been the most tiring tenth of a mile I’ve had this year.
Later I took a big fall and broke a trekking pole. Not ideal since I put some great force on them in this terrain and I’m not sure when I’ll be able to get a replacement part.
