Day 301

Day 301 (AZT 6): 30 miles

It was a slow start to the day. I didn’t get up until after sunrise when the sun started to cook me in me tent. And I heard a truck drive by me so I thought I should get moving since I was camped right beside a dirt road intersection.

After a few miles I made it to Tub Ranch which lets hikers get their water. At first I just saw a big pond for the cows and decided there had to be something better. There was a metal box sticking up out of the ground so I opened it up and there was glorious clear water inside. There was some weird, pretty large, thing swimming around inside but the water still tasted good.

I came across a herd of jacked cattle this morning. They all looked like they’d been taking some serious creatine. Their horns also added to their badass threat level.

In the afternoon I had a fun game of peek a boo with a deer. He kept walking step for step with me on the other side of a tree, then I stopped so the tree was in the way. He peeked back the other way and I moved to the other side. I did this 4-5 times and had way too much fun teasing this hairbrained animal.

I passed the first other thru hikers I’ve seen so far. I didn’t actually see them or talk to them but some trail runners said they were up ahead then I just saw their tents when I passed by at night. Really haven’t seen many people yet.

I really struggled to find a campsite at the end of the day. Everything is slanted and covered in branches or pointy things. I ended up just setting up shop on a side dirt road that doesn’t appear to be popular. I’ll still try to get out of here early in case it turns out to be.

Song of the day: bulls on parade-rage against the machine
