Day 310

Day 310 (AZT: 15): 36 miles
I oftentimes carry too much food, not on purpose, but because my eyes are bigger than my stomach at the store and once I get out there I just don’t want to eat much. A lot of the foods I’ve been eating this year I can hardly stand anymore. If I see another bag of trail mix or nuts I might just vomit on sight. All that to say, that I had some extra food today so I ended up saving a little bit of time and not resupplying at Roosevelt Lake but instead just cruising by.
I’m seeing some of the normal tall cacti now. You see a lot of sharp plants around the desert but it’s nice to finally be around the real deal that you came for. And these one are sort of the gentlemen of sharp plants, you’re not gonna miss em whereas a lot of the cheeky short ones you might not notice and just step right on. I stepped on one in New Mexico and a needle pierced into my foot and hurt so bad I whimpered like a dog that just got its leg ran over.
I love the sunsets out here so much. The whole day can be shit until that moment, and then all is right with the world. One of my friends pointed it out perfectly recently: “Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!”
I saw a helicopter in the mountains today and it was a fun realization. We were at the same elevation. I think it was an orange one which looked similar to the emergency one that picked up a guy near me on the CDT so I hope everything ended up fine if that was the case.
I’m getting some replacement socks along with my resupply. With the dry desert air, and all the dirt in my shoes, these ones formed holes much faster than ones recently. For most of the year I think a pair would typically last about 10 days before getting holes. God bless the darn tough warranty.
