Day 317

Day 317

Day 317 (AZT 22): 38 miles

I started the day by hiking down and out of Saguaro National Park. I got off trail a little bit at times and got frustrated real quick cause I was getting jabbed by so many plants and a lot of barbs were sticking to my socks and stabbing my ankle. There’s so many barbs on my socks throughout the day it’s futile to try to get them off. They’re painful and/or itchy all day depending on their position. At the end of the day when I took my shoes and socks off I just itched my ankles for a few minutes. The most soothing pleasure I’ve felt in a while.

I was running on fumes before I got into Vail. I had run out of food and was starting to feel uncomfortable. I wasn’t to the point where the giant beetles on the ground looked appetizing but I might’ve been approaching it. On the last half mile before I got to the trailhead I befriended a group of hikers going back to their cars so I got a ride right away and didn’t have to wait on a hitch.

Overall it was really easy hiking today. It was pretty flat and thought it was overgrown a little it wasn’t hard brush. It was just grass and other things that left some barbs on the ankles.

While in Vail I realized to make the most convenient/cheap flight, I’ll need to pick up the pace a little. I decided I’ll just have to go John Wicko mode for a few days. I ended up hiking until around 1am tonight and will probably have to do the same the next couple nights. I just mentioned yesterday how I did a good number of 18-20 hour days earlier in the year. I didn’t know that would be foreshadowing my near future.

I don’t remember the exact quote but when 50 cent was making his movie Get Rich or Die Tryin he was also making the soundtrack at the same time. Some reporter asked him when he slept to which he responded “Sleep?!? Sleep is for people who are broke. Why would I sleep? I finally made it. I’ve got the opportunity to make a dream become reality.” Gotta make it heaven I’m goin thru hell. If I can’t do it homie it can’t be done. Love 50

About Me

I'm from rural Ohio and had never camped or backpacked until 2018. Just 3 years later I completed a Calendar Year Triple Crown as my first thru hiking experience and now have ~15,000 miles of backpacking under my trail runners.
