Day 318

Day 318

Day 318 (AZT 23): 43 miles

After a less than 4 hours of sleep I was up and rolling again. There’s something about a ticking clock that doesn’t necessarily make it easier to get up when planned, but just makes it more necessary so therefore it happens easier. It also helps that with only a few days left I’m not too worried about my battery so I can start bumping some music to make me get up instead of just smashing my alarm right away and laying there until I fall asleep again.

There was a little less barbs in my socks to deal with today. The terrain was easy again with real gradual ascents and the day ended with a nice roadwalk into Patagonia. I was flying during the last road walk into town to try to get some food before stuff closed down. I ended up making it in time to get some pizza. One bite everybody knows the rules. 6.8/10. I was sitting down inside for a bit then the manager came over and had a fun conversation. I could tell she wanted to ask me to move outside cause I smelled, but watching her stumble on her words to try to not be rude was very entertaining to me. I didn’t mind. And it was a first. One of my goals this year was to get kicked out of a buffet but I guess this is an alright consolation.

I probably saw more cows today than I have since some days in Wyoming and New Mexico. They were everywhere, not in big groups, but just alongside the trail or road hanging out. I heard a number of them walking away through brush that sounded painful, still nothing compares to the one I saw in New Mexico get its undercarriage caught trying to jump over a barbed wire fence when it saw me. 🥲

I am exhausted after pushing myself to move uncomfortably fast to get into town. I’ve put myself in better position to finish on time but my body is feeling it. I’m looking forward to a little more sleep tonight.

About Me

I'm from rural Ohio and had never camped or backpacked until 2018. Just 3 years later I completed a Calendar Year Triple Crown as my first thru hiking experience and now have ~15,000 miles of backpacking under my trail runners.
