Day 13

Day 13 (BMT): 9 miles
I’m finishing the BMT where I began my calendar year triple crown hike last year in January and where I began my first ever solo hike in December 2018.
When I set foot there in 2018, I was not mentally prepared for how miserable Georgia would be in December. It’s the south, it’ll be warm right?
When I started my hike there last year, I was mentally prepared for how miserable it would be, but I never stopped being amazed at how difficult, empowering, painful, fun, demoralizing, euphoric, and life-changing it was.
As I stand on the summit of Springer Mountain now, the feelings of nostalgia are more potent than the feelings of accomplishment. I’ll be sharing my thoughts on the Benton Mackaye Trail soon enough, but I’m satisfied having completed it mainly as a minor preamble of bigger things to come this summer. And I am overjoyed to be back on Springer Mountain, a place that has a special place in my heart, and many others.
