Day 15-17
Recovery Days

Since I’m recovering from the sun and I’ve got nothing else to do, I’ll give my thoughts on the Benton Mackaye Trail.
The Benton Mackaye Trail is like Dua Lipa on a farm. I’m stealing the sentiment from Russel Westbrook on a farm (I’m guessing like 20 people might get that reference).
But think about it. If Dua Lipa grew up on a farm, none of us would have the pleasure of hearing her sing or seeing her beauty. All of that beauty and talent would be hidden. It would only get the slightest amount of displayed when she took her weekly trip to market with her mother. And that is how I feel about the BMT. Hidden beauty.
I know I’m in beautiful country. I can occasionally see views of the surrounding green mountains in town or from roads. But I didn’t see any of that on the trail. It seemed to just climb up and down mountains engulfed in trees. I can only distinctly remember 3 open views the whole time, literally at the beginning middle and end.
And people tend to get defensive about the Appalachian trail and hiking in the east. I knew there would be significantly less views than hiking out west, but I felt like there were significantly less views than even hiking on the AT. Not to mention, it was a pretty tough trail. So the rewards didn’t seem to be in line with the work put forth. I was not its biggest fan, and I can certainly say I won’t be thru hiking it ever again. But at least now I know that. And if you absolutely love just being in the forest, this is the trail for you.
