Day 22

Day 22

Day 22 (PT 7): 24 miles

Today was a lot more of the same. I was hiking on overgrown trail with tall grass all around, checking myself for ticks frequently and pulling off quite a few. It was still hot and I was still a sweaty mess. I go back and forth between wiping my forehead and eyebrows every 10 seconds because they’re a faucet to wearing a buff on my head that then in turn makes me more hot. This heat, sun, humidity is quite the combo. I just really want some overcast days where it doesn’t rain.

I might need to change up my hiking style to chill out a little more in the middle of the day. I’ve kinda been sleeping in and ending early, but doing that makes me work the most in the heat of the day. I might try to hike more towards dawn and dusk and maybe even nap in the middle of the day. But that would also require me to get up early so we’ll see how well that goes.

I was pretty down in the dumps in the middle of the day. I reminded myself that it’s such a beautiful day. I turned on the new Future album. And I started floating down the trail.

In the evening I came across Shoal Creek Church which is one of the oldest churches in the state. It was a cute little church and reminded me of the church in There Will Be Blood. I ended up taking a much longer break there than I planned but it was some good shade and a nice break from the day.

After that I entered an area that looked like it went through a controlled burn recently. Everything except the trail was burnt on the ground. When I got to my campsite, it wasn’t ideal. The area was mostly burnt, but I was able to find one spot that was void of black ash.

Gosh I am so sweaty it’s disgusting. Last year I had 2 straight weeks over 100 degrees and I really don’t remember being this sweaty just laying in my tent. Either this humidity is really adding to it or I blocked those bad memories out.
