Day 4

Day 4 (BMT): 27 miles

It was certainly an easier day of hiking, which is probably why I hiked further than I planned to this early and I’m feeling a little rough. I forgot how much this shit hurts in the beginning.

The skin on the bottoms of my feet is really tender and I fear that my athlete’s foot and plantar warts are coming back after hiking in sopping wet shoes.

Early in the day I went through the tunnel at the end of the road to nowhere. Unfortunately I didn’t yell anything fun with the echo because there were some other goobers in there at the time.

After that I spent the rest of the day hiking along the banks of a lot of rivers and creeks. I occasionally got a peeks of the mountains through the trees but not too much. So far this has been a pretty non-scenic trail, but maybe that’ll change. The highlight of the day was finding half a sun chair by a river.

Ray Baker was out today and I think I even got a little burnt. It was also the first time I felt the humidity. Occasionally there was a nice wind but it was a little warm.

I passed a decent number of downed trees today (it looks like this part of the park isn’t traveled much) and went full lumberjack/karate mode on one. I used my trekking pole and bashed off all the branches sticking off the trunk. It made it easy to climb over after all that was gone. Minecraft in real life

My neck and back are really tight which is kinda surprising since I’m carrying a pretty light weight load. They better get adjusted before I have to carry multiple gallons of water on my back in Oregon.

I had a moment of ultra clarity at camp at the end of the day. I was really tired so I didn’t feel like cooking. As I was sitting on a rock, eating my peanut butter by the spoonful, I felt at peace. I could stop moving and just appreciate where I was. So far this has not been super scenic. It’s certainly less pretty than other places I’ve been. But it’s just nice to be out in the woods. And there is something special about this place. I don’t know what it is, but there is something special
