Day 150 (PNT 45): 24 miles
Hammer dropped me off at the ferry this morning to continue on the trail. After saying goodbye I boarded the ferry to get to Port Townsend. Unless you really like swimming, this ferry is an interesting part of the trail getting you from the mainland to the Olympic peninsula.
After getting to Port Townsend, I ran to the post office. I knew I would be hitting it on a Sunday so I had to work something out. I called them last week and explained the unique situation and the manager told me that they have a few people doing dock work on Sundays early so I could pick it up then.
He must not l have told anyone. When I explained the situation today, they didn’t know anything about it and weren’t too happy. But they did give me my package so I was very thankful.
But I was not thankful for (all) of what was in the package. I got new shoes after 1,000 miles which were nice. I also got a replacement shirt since mine had about 11 holes in it. But i also got my bear canister, the bane of existence for any thru hiker. A heavy chunk of plastic to take up a lot of space in your pack that can’t even hold all of your food. But Olympic national park requires them so 😁🙃
After getting some McDonald’s, I got a ride back from a cool guy named Michael. It was one of the first cars and it was a great ride, so it worked out nicely. I skipped some road walking highway miles cause
1. I didn’t want to
2. To stay on pace for my Olympic NP permit.
I don’t think you’re a real thru hiker until you develop a distaste for hiking thru national parks cause of the extra hoops to jump through. But I’ve heard great things about Olympic so I’ll enter tomorrow and find out for myself.
