Day 145 (PNT 50)

Day 155 (PNT 50): 44 miles

I descended in the morning down into the Hoh River valley. It was a neat rainforest.

I got a hitch into Forks with a cool couple and we completed a crossword on the way into town. I got a pizza that was way too big and packed out 4 slices in my bear can. I picked up a small resupply and a beer before leaving town.

I got to the coast at the perfect bad time. There was a part of the beach walk that was only possible under a 2 foot tide and the only time for that was between 11pm and 1am so I got to do that tonight. I’m not a huge fan of this tide thing and nature telling me what to do. I’d rather bend the trail to my will and beat it into submission.

I started the beach walk in the pitch black after laying down on the side of the trail for an hour waiting for the tide to recede. It was raining and foggy so I really couldn’t see ahead of me much either. This, combined with rock hopping on slippery rocks with water splashing up on the ground around them made for an interesting night. I wouldn’t say it was enjoyable, but I had to get around Diamond Rock with its 2 foot tide restriction.

I saw 8 raccoons which scared me more than black bears. Idk why but I had the feeling these little bastards were gonna run up and give me rabies.

I was happy to finally see the rope which indicated there was an overland trail so I could get off the beach. When I got to the top something was up. I’m not sure if it was the trees or a decaying body but something smelled so bad I was holding back puke for 10 minutes while walking.

I thought I might go farther but ended up getting pretty tired and calling it a night around 2.
