Day 157 (PNT 52): 9 miles
I stayed in my tent all morning cause it was pouring rain. It let up around 11 so i finally packed up. The guy who’s yard I camped in said he would be back in the morning and could bring me across the Quillayute River. He didn’t come back by the time I packed up so I had to find another way.
I walked around the marina for a while before finding a worker. He said he might be able to help and called a guy that ended up giving me a ride. He was really nice and even was a personal ATM. I Venmo’d him and he gave me some cash to pay the guy.
By the time I got across the river and started hiking it was 1:30. I wanted to try to finish, but high tide was approaching.
I made it about 9 miles before stuff happened. The tide was covering up the beach so I tried to climb up the headland to find an overland trail. I climbed up there and looked around for 45 minutes without any luck. I was falling a lot, walked through some nettles, and just having a generally bad time.
I crawled back down to the beach, landing about 50 yards ahead of where I climbed up. 50 yards in 45 minutes.
I then took off my shoes and socks and walked through the water to get around a small pinch point on the beach. The water was up to my waist but didn’t feel too strong. I did cut my heel on a log in all the whitewash before finally making it to dry sand.
I then climbed up and over a little ridge to an island and landed on a beautiful beach. I hiked on it for a bit before reaching another area which was impossible in high tide. I decided to call it a day and get moving again at low tide.
I debated cowboy camping on the beach for a second but ended up setting up my tent. I’m glad I did cause the sand fleas came out to play. Another night sleeping on the hard ground cause my sleeping pad is completely deflated after 10 minutes. The air valve is leaking so much I can hear it.
I had a pretty good time watching the sun set over the ocean.
Song of the day: lost-frank ocean
