Day 148 (PNT 53)

Day 158 (PNT 53): 16 miles

The alarm went off at 3am and I wasn’t feeling it, but I was feeling finishing. I packed up my stuff with sand fleas hopping all over.

The first mile flew by and I was feeling good. I thought I might make it to the terminus in good time. Then I hit a section that was all slippery rocks in water. I couldn’t see shit and I was slipping around constantly. I slipped into the water probably 6-7 times and was pissed every time. I had my headlamp on but couldn’t really see shit around me. This 3-4 miles was super slow going and angering. I moved less than 1 mph for most of it. Once it was light, it was a lot easier. I could try to look for a better route through the rocks rather than just barging forward only seeing 6 feet in front of me.

I did get a little risky on a pinch point as the tide was getting bigger again. There were some big rocks just out of the water that were slippery with water crashing around. As I stepped from one big rock to another, a big wave crashed and the former rock was underwater. I felt like an action movie star 😎

Within the last 2 miles of trail I lost the pommel on my trekking pole. I backtracked a little to find it but had no luck. I thought I might need it for one more night of camping before returning to civilization but it turned out to not be a problem.

When I reached Cape Alava I was pretty happy. I was feeling myself. This has been a tough hike, especially at the end. I was not the biggest fan of beach hiking. But overall the trail was amazing. I expected it to be beautiful and it sure was. I ended up taking a little longer than expected, mainly cause I took a lot more zeros than expected. My loose deadline to finish early enough to hike the CT next was September 5th and I finished on the 5th. Know thyself

Thankfully the trail provides! Within 5 minutes of me hitchhiking out of the trailhead, the first car stopped and they were headed all the way back to Seattle. Sometimes life can’t work out any better.
