Day 25

Day 25

Day 25: 26 miles

I passed the quarter way marker today. Like I’ve mentioned, I’m hoping to start doing some larger miles in Virginia but that’ll only come to fruition if the weather cooperates.

The morning started out much less than ideal. I was postholing up to my shins and knees. But this wasn’t just fluffy snow. The morning was mostly walking on ridges and this was hard-packed frozen snow, much like ice. So when my foot broke the surface, the surrounding ice would cut into my ankles which was pretty painful. This went on for a long time and was frustrating. I can usually tell a day isn’t going very well if I am randomly yelling out of anger. My mood is evident in the second picture.

Eventually the ice gave way to snow and I was able to move a little better. Then eventually I dropped in elevation and there was only a few inches of snow to walk through rather than a foot.

In the middle for the day I passed a sign that was selling mattresses. A few road crossings later I came across some mattresses on the side of the road. Not sure if they were connected or not, but if so it doesn’t seem like a great business model to ask people to pay for your product when you’re giving it away for free. If they weren’t covered in snow I probably would’ve plopped down for a nice break but I kept on trucking.

After dark I was walking through a few cow pastures and it was tough to follow the trail. I think the trail makers enjoyed twisting and turning it as much as possible and leading the trail into tire tracks which were not the trail. When I did get lost for a bit I turned to the age old wisdom of “just go up” and eventually refound the trail at the top of the hill.

The coyotes must’ve been having a rager tonight cause they were howling like crazy.

About Me

I'm from rural Ohio and had never camped or backpacked until 2018. Just 3 years later I completed a Calendar Year Triple Crown as my first thru hiking experience and now have ~15,000 miles of backpacking under my trail runners.
