Day 39

Day 39: 32 miles

I was reminded of this quote today while listening to a podcast about an old show I used to watch: Deadwood. I strongly recommend for anyone out there. Anyways I just thought it applied fairly well to out here. Complaining achieves nothing. There will be a lot of tough times and you just got to push through them to do the same thing tomorrow. And the day after. And the day after.

The day was not off to a hot start when I was getting some water and the water that splashed in my gloves froze almost instantly. The water in my bottle began to freeze in about 10 minutes. It was a little bit below 5 this morning and being enclosed and in my warm sleeping bag I didn’t notice it all all last night. Until I got up and around today and then it stuck with me. It was pretty cold almost all day except for about an hour when it got above freezing. It’s going to be even colder tonight, probably a little below zero but after this at least it should warm up for a while.

I didn’t plan on going this far today. I planned on doing round 2 of privy bivy but when i got to this one it was pretty dirty so I pushed on further to another one in similar hopes. This one was locked. Frustration. Then I pushed on to the next campsite to end the day.

I had my 3 layers of gloves on all day to fight the cold so I didn’t go through the hassle of taking them off much for pictures. I dream of the day when I’ll just be able to whip out my phone and take a picture and not have to worry about gloves. One day

My shoulder has felt a little out of whack lately, not sure if it was from carrying an awkward load yesterday with all my food or (more likely) constantly using my upper body to parkour over the fallen trees.
Last 2 pics are action shots of me running over to my camera tripod as it’s falling over on my trekking pole. This is a fairly common occurrence.

I’ve started to notice a lot more birds. I’m not sure if more are showing up now because it’s supposed to be warmer in a few days and it’s not currently raining like normal or if I’m just noticing them more. I do love to watch them fly majestically over a mountainous landscape and then arc up or dive down. I learned today that that cannot properly be captured on video at all. I tried and every time I started the video i immediately lost where I was looking at.

I broke my headlamp a few days ago but snapped it back together and it held lightly. Now I really broke it. Tonight I was hiking while holding the light in my hand.
