Day 43

Day 43

Day 43: 24 miles

Today was all about some missions. Mission 1 get out of Virginia. Mission 2 get to Harpers ferry so I can crash with some family nearby. Mission 3 don’t get sunburnt.

After spending 3 weeks in Virginia I am finally done with it. It was a bit of a dramatic finish with “all of us” banging at the time. To put it nicely, I would say I have a disdain for Virginia. A lot of people experience the “Virginia blues” while hiking the AT. I didn’t have those. I had the Virginia animosities. For so much of the state I had bad weather and as a result of that, pretty bad trail. The state does lack exciting points or views at times, but even the times with them often left me wanting because there was nothing to see through the fog. It’s nothing personal Virginia, just business, and you were a poor investment. On the bright side, I will probably just face worse weather and trail as I head more north. Still, happy to be moving on from Virginia

Thankfully I did make it into Harpers ferry today and I loved the little town. I totally nerded out at the history of this place where so much happened. Seeing it at sunset was also a nice touch.

Mission 3 failed. My face has been getting sunburnt lately off the reflection from the snow but today I got fried and even my legs got burnt cause i shed my pants around 10:30 when I was sweating bullets.

Around 10:30, as I arrived at Raven Rocks, there were 2 ravens soaring and 2 more perched in trees. It seems aptly named.

It was a hot day today so the snow was melting a lot which I do like to see but it also means I’m waking in slush and puddles all day. A trade off I will take for less snow on the trail in the coming days.

Song of the day: All of Us- labyrinth and zendaya

About Me

I'm from rural Ohio and had never camped or backpacked until 2018. Just 3 years later I completed a Calendar Year Triple Crown as my first thru hiking experience and now have ~15,000 miles of backpacking under my trail runners.
