Day 44

Day 44

Day 44: 0 miles

After pushing some consistent big miles lately I decided to take my first rest day of the trip. In the hiker dictionary this is called a zero day cause zero miles are covered. I didn’t absolutely need to but I’m a little bit ahead of schedule and I’m sure it won’t hurt my body taking a little break for a day. Although part of me does feel like a fool for taking a day off when the weather is great outside.

After covering 0 miles today I’ll be averaging a little over 23 miles per day which is higher than my conservative goal of 21. I assume my average will drop as I go farther as the trail gets more difficult and the weather likely worse in the northeast.

Thankfully I’ve been blessed to have some kin in the area to stay with for the day. And I’ve enjoyed my day off of working on plans, catching up on some calls, and watching some arrested development.

The family I’m staying with has 3 young kids and I think I just need to figure how to bottle up their energy and bring it with me on the trail.

I also did the half gallon ice cream challenge since I’m near the halfway point and absolutely crushed it. I received a good amount of messages kind of surprised. All I can say is don’t underestimate my binge eating skills. I could have pretty easily done 3/4 of a gallon, possibly even a full gallon.

About Me

I'm from rural Ohio and had never camped or backpacked until 2018. Just 3 years later I completed a Calendar Year Triple Crown as my first thru hiking experience and now have ~15,000 miles of backpacking under my trail runners.
