Day 8

Day 8: 25 miles

Got to Fontana before the post office was open so I spent some time in a bathroom with a space heater and made some food and enjoyed the heat and running water while I had it. Also got my stuff charged up before the smokies which is assuring.

The guy at the Fontana marina was really nice and helpful with info and calling a shuttle to get to the post office. Very efficient setup for hikers to get to town cheap. The shuttle driver said I was the first thru hiker to come through this year. Fortune favors the bold! (Hopefully) and the only reason I know that Latin is from John Wick. If #4 coms out while I’m out here I will be displeased.

I walked over Fontana Dam, the largest east of the Mississippi. There’s a new fun fact for ya. Then I ascended the big climb into the smokies to one of my favorite places-Shuckstack fire tower. For almost anywhere I am, the pictures don’t do it justice but this place especially. If you’re in the smokies go see it for yourself.

Ended up hiking later into the night to cover some more miles because it is supposed to rain/snow in the morning and I might get off to a later start.

Weather: warm and sunny

Song of the day: Watermelon Sugar-Harry Styles

About Me

I'm from rural Ohio and had never camped or backpacked until 2018. Just 3 years later I completed a Calendar Year Triple Crown as my first thru hiking experience and now have ~15,000 miles of backpacking under my trail runners.
